MAPUTO – Today, in Maputo, EAGE Sub-Saharan Africa Energy Forum 2026. The first day was marked by a strong appeal to innovation, to survey geological data and to share technical knowledge about Mozambican subsoil. The event, which runs from 13 to 15 April in Maputo, brings together industry leaders, geoscientists and engineers to discuss the energy landscape of the region and unlock its potential. The participants discuss topics such as history, the quality of reservoirs and the observation of various depositional facies, among other technical aspects in emerging and mature basins.
At the opening session, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME), António Manda, stressed the strategic importance of the forum for the country and encouraged participants to promote debates that result in the identification of paths and technological solutions capable of enabling new research in sedimentary basins in the national territory. The leader also said that, despite economic challenges, Mozambique is a country of great potential, whose wealth should be used as a driving force for national transformation and development.
Throughout the day, national and international experts, including managers of the National Petroleum Institute (INP), shared their experiences on profile studies and the richness of geological formations of the Sedimentary Basins of Mozambique and Rovuma. In parallel to the presentations, there is a technical exhibition on site where the professionals of the INP present results of recent studies on the potential of hydrocarbons in Mozambique, allowing a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges of the oil sector in the country.
One of the most anticipated moments, scheduled for the second day of work, is the Core Workshop. This practical session, facilitated by the INP in coordination with Core Laboratories (UK), will allow delegates a macroscopic assessment and examination of various samples of carotes from the Mozambique and Rovuma Basins.
The forum continues until Wednesday with sessions devoted to the approach of unexplored areas (frontier) and the role of new technologies in maximising the value of energy assets in Sub-Saharan Africa.
