The country is part of the restricted list of eight major destinations for hydrocarbon research and production in 2025, driven by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects.
MAPUTO – Mozambique reaffirmed its position as one of the strategic destinations for investment in the upstream (research and production) of oil and gas in Africa. According to recent data from the consultant Wood Mackenzie, quoted by the portal Businesses Insider Africa, the country counted among the eight main investment centers of the continent in 2025, surpassing the 500 million dollar stake in capital flows.
A Business Insier Africa points out that the hydrocarbon industry in Africa is undergoing a selective phase, where large energy multinationals concentrate their resources on high potential and low risk projects. In this scenario, Mozambique stands out alongside powers such as Nigeria and Angola, the result of the advancement of its Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects.
Unlike previous years, where oil dominated attention, natural gas emerged in 2025 as the main engine of new capital flows. Mozambique, with its vast reserves in the Rovuma Basin, stands as a crucial supplier not only to the markets of Europe and Asia, but also to domestic industrial development and energy generation in the southern African region.
While Nigeria led the list with a long-term asset investment of 5.3 billion dollars, Mozambique is part of the elite group that also secured important investment volumes (CAPEX) alongside countries such as Uganda, Ivory Coast and Ghana.
Wood Mackenzie's analysis underlines that Mozambique's continued success and other centers depend on the ability to convert research potential into effective production. The focus of investors is now focused on the Final Investment Decisions (FID), which require regulatory clarity and competitive tax incentives.
The report also points out that foreign oil companies are reformulating their portfolios by abandoning their assets. onshore high risk, doubling investment in fields offshore and gas projects with longer storage life.
With the world navigating in the energy transition, Mozambique remains a strategic border of hydrocarbons. The country is seen as one of the "centres" that will shape the history of oil and gas in Africa and the world in the coming years, playing a key role in global energy security.
