History of Petroleum Exploration in Mozambique

Exploration for hydrocarbons in Mozambique goes back to 1904 when the early explorers discovered thick sedimentary basins onshore Mozambique. Poor technology and lack of funds halted those early exploration attempts.

 

Wells

A total of 222 wells have been performed to date in Mozambique. These wells are in the National Oil Database of INP and they are categorized as follows:

Seismic

About 208,500 km of two-dimensional seismic (2D) were acquired onshore and offshore, throughout the national territory from 1953 to 2017.

 

Production

Natural Gas Production

 The natural gas production started In 2004, in the Temane field and in 2009 the Pande field was coupled to the system. The total amount of gas produced from 2004 until December 2013 was 1,140,675,883.15 GJ (Giga Joules), equivalent to 27.272.933.591 Nm3 (normal cubic meters) and condensate produced was 13,002,192 bbl (barrels).
