Rovuma offshore, Area 4

The area was awarded to Eni and ENH in the second offshore licensing round, in the deep offshore (1500-2600 m water depth) the northern part of the Cabo Delgado Province, in the Rovuma sedimentary basin. The EPCC was signed 20th December 2006 with the effective date on 01 February 2007. (Link to the signed EPCC).

Here is a brief description of the contract.

Concession area Rovuma offshore, Area 4 (EPCC) Background, activities carried out, status, and further plans
Year awarded 2006

The area was awarded to Eni and ENH in the second offshore licensing round, in the deep offshore (1500-2600 m water depth) the northern part of the Cabo Delgado Province, in the Rovuma sedimentary basin. The EPCC was signed 20th December 2006 with the effective date on 01 February 2007. The contract was split in three exploration periods total of 8 years (4+2+2 years), with the following work commitment for each period:

First exploration period – 48 months

  • Reprocessing and interpretation of 100 km of 2D seismic data
  • Acquire 2000 km of 2D seismic data
  • Acquire 1000 km2 of 3D seismic data

Second exploration period – 24 months

  • 2 exploration wells to be drilled until 5000 m or to a target of Cretaceous age

Third exploration period – 24 months

  • 2 exploration well to be drilled until 5000 m or to a target of Cretaceous age

As a response to the commitment the Concessionaire acquired and processed 4,529 km of 2D and 4,415 km2 3D seismic data during the first and second exploration period, and 3,064 km2 of 3D in the third period. During the first two periods 15 wildcat and appraisal wells were drilled, resulting in several gas discoveries and appraisal of discoveries from November 2011 and onward.

6 Discovery Areas of totally 4 012 sq.km have been approved, of which the Mamba Discovery Area has reservoirs straddling the Concession Contract Area border between Area 1 and Area 4 (referred to as “Prosperidade” and “Mamba”, respectively, in the straddling “Prosperidade/Mamba Complex”). A total of about 85 tcf of gas in place is estimated for the Area 1 and Area 4 straddling four main reservoirs in Oligocene and Eocene, about half of this volume in each Area.

In Area 4 the following in-place gas volumes have been proven:

  • nearly 45 tcf in 5 pools straddling the border with the adjacent Area 1 (the Mamba Complex, with 5 straddling discoveries with reservoirs in Oligocene, Eocene and Paleocene)
  • about 30 tcf in 3 pools totally confined in Area 4 (the Coral field in Eocene, and two others in Oligocene and Paleocene)
  • about 3 tcf in 2 pools totally confined in Area 4 in the southeastern Agulha discoveries (in Paleocene and Cretaceous)

In terms of development the Plan of Development (PoD) for Coral South was approved in February 2016. The production is expected to start in 2022, through a FLNG (Floating Liquified Natural Gas) platform.

In 2018 MRV submitted the Plan of Development of phase 1 Mamba Straddling Reservoirs and one non-straddling reservoir, which is being evaluated. For this development it is planned construction of 2 onshore LNG trains in Afungi, in the Palma district in Cabo Delgado province – with expected start-up around 2024.
